teacher-225x152Behind every successful public school student is a school teacher. And many great masters of public schools. But teachers can not do it alone.

The research is clear: Students perform better in school when their parents are actively involved in their education.

“Teachers help students to assemble and make their hopes and dreams,” said Reg Weaver, president of the National Education Association. “And when parents are involved in their children’s education, they will go further – and the schools they attend are better.”

NEA, which represents 2.8 million teachers, education support professionals and other educators, offers five easy ways for parents to become more involved in education this year:

  1. Check with teachers on a regular basis. Be proactive and not wait for a problem or a challenge to ask before acting.
  2. Get to know the guidance counselors and other school employees. The Education Support Professionals are generally all students of the school, and their relationship with your children, they continue to move from one grade to another.
  3. Attend school activities. Open houses, parent-teacher conferences, dances or other school activities provide good opportunities for parents to connect with teachers and school employees.
  4. Volunteer at school. Take time in your schedule to assist in school plays as a classroom or help chaperone field trips.
  5. Keep the lines of communication open. Whether your children in class, friends or neighbors, get to know others – especially parents who have children attending the same school. Form support groups to work on problems and issues of mutual interest.

“The house is an extension of learning that takes place within the classroom,” Weaver said. “If the parents involved in their child’s education, everyone wins.”
